The Fight Against Malaria

Malaria is a mosquito-borne/ infectious disease that 1-3 million people die from each year, mostly young children in sub-saharan africa. Now while many associate malaria with poverty, it's actually a major cause of poverty. There are wide variety of antimalarial drugs that are available to treat malaria and most indications are that it's a fairly preventable disease.

Things we can do to prevent malaria are:
1) sleep in a room with screens on the windows and doors.
2) Use a mosquito net over your bed.
3) If possible, spray the net with permethrin (one brand name: Elimite). (Permethrin is a spray that repels mosquitoes.)
4) During the evening, wear light-colored pants and shirts with long sleeves.
5) It's important to protect yourself with a bug repellent spray that contains no more than 35% of a chemical called DEET.
6) Avoid going outdoors without protection in the evening, when mosquitoes are typically more active. Medicine is also available to help prevent malaria.

Bill Gates said "I believe that if you show people a problem, and then you show them the solution, they will be moved to act. The Global Malaria Action Plan lays out an achievable blueprint for fighting malaria – now it's time for the world to take action" then he put his money where his mouth is and donated 168 million dollars to help fight it

Below is one particular company who is actively trying to fight this cause. I came across this organization while googling the phrase "pictures of tshirts" and instantly fell in love with their cause. What they do is donate the majority of the proceeds they receive from selling their tshirts towards curing malaria. This company has been has been assisting refugees since May 2007 and became an established non-profit in December 2007.
